What do I do if I’m Homeless?

If you find yourself homeless, it’s important not to panic—there is help available.Many local services, charities, and organizations are ready to support you with finding a place to stay, food, and essential guidance. You don’t have to go through this alone; reach out to the contacts provided, and they’ll help you take the next steps toward finding safety and stability.

Step 1: Declare Yourself Homeless

Visit your local Civic Centre or call the housing advice team at 0191 433 5353.

For emergencies, you can reach the 24-hour service at 0800 953 7112.

Alternatively, email housingadvice@gateshead.gov.uk for assistance.

Step 2: Apply for Universal Credit

Sign up for Universal Credit to ensure you have a source of income. This will also make you eligible for housing support. If you’re unsure, you can ask the Jobcentre to help you declare yourself homeless.

Tip: It’s recommended to get a sick note from your GP while you're homeless, as mental health issues can arise.

Your GP can also connect you with a link worker for counseling or therapy.

Step 3: Apply for Council Housing

Sign up for council housing at your local council's website (e.g., gateshead.gov.uk).

Step 4: Get Help from OASIS Charity

Step 5: Seek Help from Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice can assist you in working with your housing officer after you’ve declared yourself homeless. They also provide access to a food bank. You can reach them by calling 0800 144 8848.

For Those Aged 16-18:

Step 1: Contact Child Social Services

If you are under 18, reach out to child social services for support. They can help arrange emergency accommodation and refer you to the next steps in housing and care.

Step 2: Contact ICRT for Emergency Support

ICRT can provide emergency accommodation and guide you on next steps. You can contact them at 0191 561 7007 for immediate help.
